Johann Wadephul, the foreign minister of Germany, called on Israel and Iran to start negotiations in order to defuse the situation.

As he and other European politicians continued to urge both parties to de-escalate, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the United Kingdom is increasing its forces in the Middle East in reaction to Israel and Iran’s war.

He made the following statement while traveling to Canada for the G7 conference, which begins on Sunday: “We are moving assets to the region, including jets, and that is for contingency support in the region.” I shall have a clear perspective on our responsibilities and duties, as well as my responsibilities as the prime minister of the United Kingdom.

According to The Times, Starmer stated that there are common concerns about escalation after consulting with a number of foreign leaders, including US President Donald Trump. His declaration followed reports in Iranian media that Tehran had threatened to attack American, British, and French military installations and naval ships if they choose to defend Israel from its reprisal attacks.

On the plane to the G7 on Saturday, he stated, “We do acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense, and we do have longstanding concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.” “But it is very evident to me that this situation needs to de-escalate.”

Since the start of the conflict on Friday, Iran has launched multiple missiles toward Israel, but unlike last year, the United States and the United Kingdom have not claimed to have helped their partner shoot them down.

Trump denied on Sunday that the United States was involved in the Israeli strike on Iran, which sparked Tehran’s reaction after Israel hit nuclear facilities and important individuals on Friday.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated late Saturday that negotiations to defuse the situation should be held within the next week, following the conclusion of the third day of hostilities between Israel and Iran.

Late on Saturday, Wadephul told ARD, “I hope that’s still possible.” Britain, France, and Germany are all prepared. I hope that Iran would embrace our offer to engage in quick nuclear program negotiations.

According to Greek media, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides stated Iran requested that he deliver a message to Israeli Leader Benjamin Netayanhu, which he will do over the phone today.

World officials have repeatedly urged moderation out of concern that the conflict may expand throughout the already war-torn region, which has been at war for nearly two years.

Israel has fought a bloody war against Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, since its October 2023 attack on Israel. It has also bombed Syria after a regime change there and launched a strong offensive against Iran-backed proxies in Yemen and Lebanon.

After the terror assault that murdered over 1,200 people, European support for Israel seemed unshakable, but in recent months, as the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates to catastrophic proportions, that support has diminished.

Wadephul stated that the G7 summit in Canada will include a discussion on the Iran-Israel conflict.

Although Tel Aviv and Tehran have not yet had direct communication, Wadephul stated that “we must make a serious attempt on both sides within the next week to break the spiral of violence.”
